What Does ‘Submit’ Mean?

What do you mean ‘submit?’

In Ephesians 5:22, Paul says ‘Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.’  Then, after explaining how a husband should love his wife, in verse 33 Paul says ‘…each one of you (husbands) must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.’

What if a wife doesn’t respect her husband?

In marriage counseling, most wives do not respect their husbands due to a various number of issues including his need to control her, his need to abuse drugs and alcohol, his need to abuse her, betrayal, not protecting her.  You get the picture.

What do I, as a husband, have to do to earn respect?

In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians he succinctly explains the husband is to be patient and kind, not easily angered, not remembering past wrongs, not prideful, not making it about himself and not boasting.  This is being the spiritual leader of the family.  He is Guiding the family into make wise spiritual choices rather than the choices of the world.

It never occurred to me that the husband must be respectable in order for the wife to respect him.
I think that it is often taught in churches that somehow you’re supposed to respect him even when he is not respectable. Which seems dangerous to women!
