God has a dim view of that idea. God came up with the bill of divorcement to protect wives who were being ‘traded-in’ for any reason by their husbands. Women could not work, so there was no way to provide for them. Enter Malachi 2:16 which reads “I hate divorce,” says the Lord God of Israel, “and I hate a man’s covering of himself with violence, as well as with his garment,” says the Lord Almighty (NIV-1984). The NIV-2011 reads: “The man who hates and divorces his wife….does violence to the one he should protect.” Fast forward to today. This same verse could read: “The man or woman who hates their spouse does violence to the one they should protect.” Divorce must never be taken lightly. Wives and husbands violently abuse each other both emotionally and physically. Not just yelling and hitting, but also passive-aggressive. The Bible appears to be saying that divorce is not to trap the innocent but to condemn the guilty (thanks for the help, Dr. Janet Smith). The husband or wife victims should not be forced to stay in that trap. God wants husbands and wives to love each other and that is the goal.
