There are many reasons you stay in a marriage.
The best reason is that both of you love each other and can handle conflict in a Christlike way.
But another reason is the fear of leaving it.
There are good reasons a Christian will leave a marriage.
What is God’s viewpoint?
While Jesus was not in favor of divorce, God allowed it because of our sinful nature (Mat. 19:9) (Deut. 24:1) .
You should not take divorce lightly. It is not God’s desire for a marriage to end. He hates divorce (Mal. 2:16).
The fear of leaving…
Many times you may suffer chronic abuse but stay in the marriage out of the fear of not having enough money.
Or you stay in a marriage out of fear that God will punish you if you leave. Or you fear what might happen to the children.
Seek God’s and other’s help…
Before taking the steps to leave your spouse, try to resolve the differences by getting wise advice from a pastor or counselor or a divorce support group.
Ask God in prayer for His discernment.
Determine a future that will be healthy for you.
Be kind to yourself.
Personal note…
As a Christian counselor, I struggle with the idea of divorce. After much thought, I have concluded that I don’t want anyone staying in an abusive relationship no matter what the abuse.
Please think about the decision carefully with the Holy Spirit.
