The Silent Treatment

I’LL JUST GIVE HIM THE SILENT TREATMENT

That is one of the worst forms of emotional abuse between couples.  It is is highly selfish and used to hate someone.   It can wear off over time but the damage is settled-in.

Activates physical pain

The silent treatment, even if brief, activates the anterior cingulate cortex – the part of the brain that detects physical pain.

Used for punishment

Want to punish your husband or wife for criticizing you with a condescending tone of voice?  Then, the silent treatment is for you.

Talk to the other instead of silence

A better way to respond to the silent treatment its to tell the other person ‘I can’t discuss this right now, it will have to wait a while.”  Then leave and pray.

What if the other refuses to let us leave?

It is best to keep repeating the sentence the exact same way until the other person realizes he or she can’t get a payoff of keeping us hostage.
