Belief and Wanting to Believe

BELIEF AND WANTING TO BELIEVE

There is a difference.  Nowhere in the Bible does it say that anyone is saved by the desire to believe.  Jesus makes this clear throughout the Gospel: We must believe (Jn 3:16).  So what do the doubters do?   They see a world of despair (and despair in their own lives) and God is allowing it.  Why would they believe in that God?

Belief is based on what the Bible says and not our own thoughts or feelings.  It is the work of the Holy Spirit to help us believe.  Martin Luther says we are to ‘flee to Grace by taking hold of God’s promise.’  Where do we find God’s promise?  The Bible.  The despair of this world is God’s business.  We cannot understand it.  God commands us to believe in The Christ who became Jesus.  Again Luther:  ‘Faith comes from reading and hearing the Word of God.’  He will pass any test we give Him.
